Events 2014-15 — APPG on Population, Development and Reproductive Health

31st March: The APPG on PDRH hosted representatives from the Swedish Family Planning Association.
2nd - 12th March: The APPG on PDRH held oral evidence sessions with representatives from UN agencies, civil society and academia as part of its parliamentary hearings on population dynamics in the post-2015 world (the report on which can be found here).
2nd March: Baroness Jenny Tonge attended a high-level event on women’s empowerment and development in Riga, Latvia.

23rd February: The APPG on PDRH committee members met with an international delegation of representatives from Ministries of Health and civil society.
9th February: Baroness Jenny Tonge received a briefing from Save the Children on Ebola in Sierra Leone and its impact on the country’s health system.
2nd February: Baroness Jenny Tonge hosted the launch of the joint report by the Population and Sustainability Network (PSN) and Population Reference Bureau (PRB) ‘Making the connection: population dynamics and climate compatible development’.

17th - 19th December: Baroness Jenny Tonge spoke in Paris at the African Forum on Population and Development meeting.
8th December: Baroness Jenny Tonge and Pauline Latham MP hosted an event entitled ‘Empowering Girls Left Behind: Comprehensive Approaches to Tackling Child Marriage and FGM in Tanzania’.
8th December: Baroness Jenny Tonge, Baroness Uddin and Sir Richard Ottaway MP attended a round-table briefing meeting on malaria during pregnancy, with guest speaker Christian Rossi from the Malaria Consortium.

25th November: The APPG on PDRH co-hosted a panel debate ‘Challenges in Global Health: 2015 and Beyond’ alongside Action for Global Health, and the APPGs on Global Health, Global TB, HIV/AIDS, Malaria and NTDs.
20th November: The APPG on PDRH announced new Parliamentary hearings called ‘Population Dynamics in the Post-2015 World’, to be conducted in 2015. A press release with details on the hearings can be found here.
18th November: Baroness Jenny Tonge attended the launch of UNFPA’s State of the World Population 2014 report.
10th November: Members of the APPG on PDRH attended a private lecture by Bill Gates on the impact of UK aid and the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
1st November: The APPG on PDRH’s Researcher attended the Development Studies Association’s annual conference.

29th - 31st October: The APPG on PDRH’s Parliamentary and Policy Advisor and Researcher attended the EuroNGOs annual conference.
20th October: The APPG on PDRH held its annual general meeting.
14th October: Baroness Jenny Tonge gave an interview to Hysteria magazine.

24th September 2014: Baroness Jenny Tonge attended the UN General Assembly in New York and was a panellist at the side event ‘The outcome of the 2014 International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action’.

23rd July: Pauline Latham MP chaired the launch of two short films in association with the Forced Marriage Unit. Viscount Craigavon, Baroness Jenny Tonge, Baroness Flather and Baroness Uddin also attended.
22nd July: Members of the APPG on PDRH attended the Girl Summit hosted by DFID, the Home Office and UNICEF. For more information visit the summit’s website.
10th July: Members of the APPG on PDRH met with Lynne Featherstone MP, Under-Secretary of State for International Development and Ministerial Champion for Tackling Violence against Women and Girls.
9th July: The APPG on PDRH and International Planned Parenthood Federation co-hosted an evening reception in the House of Lords to raise awareness for World Population Day on 11 July 2014.

12th June: Baroness Jenny Tonge introduced a Private Members’ Bill in the House of Lords to amend the Abortion Act to make provision for the termination of pregnancy following certification by one registered medical practitioner.
11th June: The APPG on PDRH and Marie Stopes International co-hosted a fringe event at the FCO’s Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. The event, called ‘Surviving Sexual Violence’, included a screening of Grace under Fire. Members of the APPG also attended several sessions, Ministerial dialogues and fringe events during the summit.
9th June: Baroness Jenny Tonge met with Spanish Parliamentarians in Madrid to discuss access to family planning and reproductive health services in Spain.

21st May: Baroness Jenny Tonge, Sir Richard Ottaway MP, Baroness Flather and Baroness Jenkin attended a panel event on family planning hosted by DFID, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Save the Children.
20th May: Baroness Jenny Tonge spoke at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Annual Dinner on the role of pharmacists in improving global maternal health.
14th May: Launch event for Patient Empowerment: For Better Quality, More Sustainable Health Services Globally, a report by the APPGs on PDRH, Global Health, HIV/AIDS, Global TB and PPIHSC.
13th May: Baroness Hodgson and Baroness Jenny Tonge spoke at an event in Parliament to promote women’s rights in the post-2015 development framework.
7th May: Baroness Jenny Tonge, Baroness Uddin, Baroness Jenkin, Pauline Latham MP and Meg Munn MP attended a briefing meeting with Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF representative to Sudan, to discuss female genital mutilation.

23rd - 25th April: Baroness Jenny Tonge, Viscount Craigavon and the APPG on PDRH’s Policy and Parliamentary Advisor attended the 6th International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, in Stockholm, Sweden.
10th April: Baroness Jenny Tonge spoke to a group of Italian parliamentarians in Rome on violence against women and girls and the role that parliamentarians can play in stopping it.
7th - 11th April: The 47th Session of the UN Commission on Population and Development took place in New York. More information is available here.
3rd April: The APPG on PDRH and the APPG on Global Health co-hosted a screening of The Right to Heal, a film promoting essential surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (visit www.therighttoheal.com for more information).
