Patient Empowerment: For Better Quality, More Sustainable Health Services Globally (2014)
The result of a partnership by six All-Party Parliamentary Groups, this report takes a global perspective on how to empower patients to play a more active role in their care. Drawing lessons from over 100 innovative case studies submitted to the review, it outlines how much the UK has to learn from high-, middle- and low-income countries – and how these lessons should be applied. At the same time, the report also highlights the UK’s strengths, its important role historically in supporting the global patient empowerment agenda, and how it can continue to play a leading role internationally.

A Childhood Lost: Report on Child Marriage in the UK and the Developing World (2012)
Child marriage, which is marriage that takes place before one or both of the spouses has reached adulthood, is a global phenomenon. This is despite the fact that it is illegal according to international – and, in most cases, national – laws. Although it is most prevalent in the developing world, there is increasing evidence of child marriage happening in the UK and other developed countries. Girls are tricked into being taken from this country by their families to marry men they have never seen. This report tells some of their stories. In other countries child and forced marriage is widespread and sometimes horrifying in its cruelty. Our report records the suffering of these girls and the expertise of many specialists in the field on the familial and societal causes of this practice.

Better Off Dead? A report on maternal morbidity (2009)
The APPG would like to introduce you to a little known, little researched, and little understood topic: maternal morbidity. The definition is disputed, but the term roughly means women’s illnesses and injuries related to pregnancy and childbirth. It leaves 10-20 million women and girls every year with long-term physical, psychological, social and economic problems. Many women are abandoned, ostracised and alone. The APPG held hearings into maternal morbidity on 8-9 December 2008, in response to members’ quest for information, on this often neglected subject.

Return of the Population Growth Factor: Its Impact upon the Millennium Development Goals (2007)
In 2000 the United Nations set eight goals for global development, to be achieved by 2015, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The MDGs made no reference to population growth and gave no recognition of its impact. The APPG initiated these parliamentary hearings because many of the countries with the greatest levels of poverty and greatest need to achieve the MDGs also have high birth rates and rapidly growing populations. The inquiry called for empirical evidence from professional, academic and institutional sources worldwide, asking whether growing populations were affecting achievement of the MDGs. This report and the conclusions and recommendations are based on the statistics and views presented during these hearings.

The Missing Link! Parliamentary hearings linking sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS (2004)
Sexual and Reproductive ill health accounts for one-third of the global burden of disease amongst women of reproductive age and one-fifth of the burden of disease among the population overall. Regrettably, sexual and reproductive health specialists have not taken a leading role in the fight against HIV/AIDS and many donor countries have prioritised HIV/AIDS at the expense of sexual and reproductive health. The failure of both the sexual and reproductive health and donor communities to work together in the struggle to overcome HIV/AIDS is the reason for this report. Why did this happen? What can sexual and reproductive health bring to the fight against HIV/AIDS given that current international and national efforts have failed to prevent the epidemic? The APPG decided to investigate what happened to the link between sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS and what has been missed as a result.

Report from a cross-party study tour to China (2002)
During the UK International Development Bill debate, amendments were proposed that restricted the UK's assistance to the largest international organisations working in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights, namely UNFPA and IPPF. Both organisations promote and ensure that individuals/couples have access to quality sexual and reproductive health care services worldwide. Amendments were proposed on the grounds that UK Government funding to UNFPA and IPPF perpetuate coercive population control practices such as forced abortion, forced sterilisation and infanticide in countries such as China. The study tour aimed for UK Members of Parliament to be informed of China's current population, reproductive health policies, programme work and UNFPA's work in China.

The first hearing was for witnesses from the UK and covered issues such as training, the effectiveness of the law against FGM, support services and care available, and work with community-based organisations. The second day of the hearings was for witnesses from Europe and beyond and covered activities in other EU countries with migrant populations who are likely to practice FGM. Evidence was also taken from the TOSTAN project in Senegal, RAINBO and the UNFPA.
